Write the letters, not ae, oe and aa
Æ, Ø and Å are three of the twenty-nine letters in the Danish alphabet, not decorated vowels. Write rod instead of rød and you ask for a root instead of the colour red, and the voice reads exactly that.

Standard Danish, Regional Speech and the du-Form
About 6 million people speak Danish. Denmark itself passed 6.02 million residents in 2026, more than 95% of them native speakers, and a Danish minority of roughly 15,000 to 40,000 people lives across the border in South Schleswig, where Danish is a recognised minority language of Germany.
Danish text to speech is a question of standard and pace rather than politeness. One standard variety carries almost every recording, the regional varieties sit outside what any engine offers, and the form of address barely moves at all.
Rigsdansk — the standard every listener expects
Rigsdansk is the standard Danish of national broadcasting, audiobooks, courses and customer lines. Every voice on this page speaks it, which is the safe choice whether your listener is in Copenhagen, Aarhus or Flensburg.
Jutlandic, Funen, Bornholm and the stød line
Jysk, fynsk, sjællandsk, sønderjysk and bornholmsk are alive in daily speech, and south of the stødgrænse the glottal stød gives way to a tonal accent instead. None of them is offered as a voice; write dialect words if you like, but expect a standard reading.
Everyone is du — Danish has no polite you
Where German writes Sie and Polish writes Pan, Danish writes du to customers, ministers and strangers alike. De survives only in letters to the royal family and the most ceremonial writing, so a script full of De sounds stiff or accidentally comic.
Danish, not Danish-accented English

Getting æ, ø, å, Numbers and Times Right
A voice reads what you wrote, not what you meant — and Danish hides meaning in three extra letters, a counting system built on twenties and a clock that runs half an hour ahead of the English one. Check these five things before you generate.
The three letters — rød is not rod
rød · hør · gåred · hear · walk — as writtenReplace æ, ø or å with ae, oe or aa and the word changes: rød becomes rod, a root. Type the real letters, or paste from a text that already has them.
Numbers run backwards — 21 is enogtyve

The habit is at least seven centuries old, and it is why fyrre and firs — forty and eighty — are so easy to mix up in writing.

Split lammekød into lamme kød and the sentence stops being about lamb.

Write æ, ø and å, leave numbers as digits, put times in twenty-four-hour form, keep compounds as single words, and address the reader as du. Five habits, and most misreadings disappear.
